Frequently asked questions

How can I get involved?

Support Fair Feast by shopping with the butcher shop, helping fund donations, or contacting the team about donating or replicating the model.

Why can’t deer simply be left unmanaged?

Scotland has no natural apex predator controlling deer numbers. High densities can damage habitats and lead to poor welfare, disease and starvation.

What caused the current challenge?

Factors include lost export markets after Brexit, low incentives, restricted movement, mild winters and the cost of processing and distribution.

Why wasn’t surplus venison already donated?

Safe, consistent donations require processing, refrigeration, storage, distribution and coordination between independent food banks.

Does the deer-management industry support the idea?

Gamekeepers have shown a willingness to donate suitable surplus, while food-bank partners are developing capacity to receive it.

Will Fair Feast only supply deer?

Venison is the initial focus. The approach may later help direct other suitable farm surpluses to food banks.
